For me, it is not the gritty mix that gets bone dry while away, but a peat moss mix in the summer while the gritty mix stayed evenly moist, not wet, for a nicer amount of time. Also my almost root bound ones too. We know that saturated soil kills roots and it kills them quickly. You will have to balance the vitality/convenience to yourself, or do what is best for you and your plants. There is a price to be paid for the convenience of not having to water for extended intervals and it comes in the form of decreased root vitality. Only you can decide if it's worth it to you.įor me, I have managed to ask my neighbor, friends, family, anyone that can just water them daily.I have even offered to pay someone, and or take them out to eat.My plants are my kids.lol The price you pay for good drainage and aeration is more frequent watering. This means that the soil particles must become smaller to hold the extra water. Of course, you need to be more in tuned to over watering and root rot as the particle size and airation decreases. If you plan taking extended periods of time away, with no one to help, I would consider making a different variation of the mix that will hold the mositure for extended periods of time, such as adding turface. If you can't have either choice, the particle size taken into consideration will play a major role for your needs, if so be it. I have someone that waters them daily for me while gone, and at times I will also use a wick, temporarily, if an absolute. For me it is not difficult to go away and worry about watering my plants.
